Baby Giraffe Born at Rain Farm
Baby Giraffe makes a wobbly stand at Rain Farm Lodge, shortly after being born at the private game reserve on the outskirts of Ballito
Owners and staff were thrilled to make the acquaintance of a brand new addition at Rain Farm Lodge on Friday, 21 March.
Rangers were thrilled to capture these shots of the newborn shortly after its birth. Giraffes normally hide in the thickest bush in the first few days after giving birth, allowing the little one to get some strength in its wobbly legs before facing potential dangers in the open.
Rain Farm Rangers have named the new addition “Stretch”. His/her older sibling, also born at Rain Farm, is named “Shorty”.
“Stretch” joins the small family of giraffes at Rain Farm, bringing their full compliment to six giraffes. Two mature males, three females and now the baby of undetermined gender.
Rain Farm offer daily game drives through the private game reserve where guests can spot various animals, including Wildebeest, Zebra, four kinds of antelope, ostrich and numerous birds. The private game farm currently stands at 300 Ha, but rangers are readying to bring down fences on the farm to include a further 300 Ha.
Rain Farm was previously a Sugar Cane Farm and it takes many years and costly effort to re-establish natural, indigenous vegetation on the site.
