Eskom, which supplies 95% of South Africa’s electricity, is spending R500 billion to replace aging equipment. A Simple Guide in Selecting Your Generator:

A generator can range in size from the size of a briefcase to run a small campsite to the size of a small house to run power through a shopping mall. Most residential homes would use a generator between the size of 5kVA and 40kVA depending on the size of the home and what the owner would like to keep powered up. If the home-owner only wishes to run his fridges, a few lights and a television, his kVA needs are substantially less than if he has a home with running air-conditioners, washing machines etc.

Most houses run on single phase electricity but some larger homes and homes in an older part of town may run on 3-phase electricity. The Electricity meter will state if it is single phase or 3-phase.

For those operating off the power grid or experiencing extended power outages for long periods of time, a Prime Power Generator is made to work hard, running at 1500 rpm for up to 12 hours at a time. For the residential home owner, expecting to run a generator for possibly one hour out of twelve when Eskom has maintenance shut downs, a Standby Power Generator is required. These generators are designed to work at 70 -80% of their maximum output at around 3000 RPM. These generators are cheaper and designed to work in the short term to last a long time.

Installing a Standby Generator

Once your kVA needs have been determined, you can select and install a suitable Standby Generator for your needs. We supply a range of generators in weatherproof, stainless steel enclosures offering a super silent solution to an unexpected blackout. Galvanized with stainless steel nuts and bolts and stainless steel silencer, your generator is designed to withstand rust in the most adverse conditions outdoors or under a simple cover structure, allowing ample air flow to counter the effects of poisonous gas fumes generated by the diesel motor. Good ventilation will also ensure the unit does not overheat.

Regular maintenance is required so your generator should be installed in an area with easy accessibility to the service panels. A scheduled service is set after the first 20 hours of use and thereafter every 100 hours of use.

The Unit should be installed as close to the Distribution Board as possible to reduce  installation costs with relation to cable costs.
