Kersfontein Farm Accommodation, Hopefield, Western Cape

Kersfontein Farm, Hopefield, Western Cape

The Kersfontein farm near Hopefield is a national monument, situated in a beautiful  landscape, with the Berg River running through it. The thousands of hectares of farmland and river plains have been run by the Melck family since 1770, and are now in the hands of the eighth generation.

Kersfontein Farm, Hopefield, Western Cape AccommodationThe tranquil surroundings and fine old Cape Dutch architecture are centered on a working wheat, cattle and sheep farm. Present custodian and farmer Julian Melck has converted a number of farm buildings into luxurious rooms and suites for Bed and Breakfast, and self-catering accommodation, furnished with period antiques to match the long-standing exteriors and historic farm environment.

This is the ultimate place to spend time enjoying the gentle pleasures of life – long walks along farm roads, which takes you through fields of wild flowers in the late winter and spring. A good read from Julian’s libraries, lazing on the banks or boating on the picturesque Berg River, home to thousands of waterfowl  in spring.

Julian’s staff prepare excellent meals, served in the early nineteenth-century dining room. Dinners in the evening can be arranged when contacting Julian.

The original bakery is now the ‘Turn & Slip’ pub, dedicated to Julian’s passion for flying, and minutes away from the farm’s own landing strip.

Kersfontein Farm honey, HopefieldKersefontein honey is harvested from the hives on the banks of the Berg River. The food for the bees is an exciting combination of wildflowers, which are abundant in the surrounding veld during the West Coast spring, and Euclyptus trees that grow in the estuary of the river resulting in a marriage of delicate and sweet flavours that gives Kersfontein Honey its unique taste and fragrance. Bottling and labelling of the glass jars takes place on the farm, from where it can be purchased.

Take the N7 to Malmesbury and continue to 5km to the Hopefield turnoff. From Hopefield town, take the road to Velddrif, and continue for 18kms. Cross over the Berg River by taking a road to the right, just before the silos on the left. The farm is on the left hand side.
