Basotho Cultural Village

The Basotho Cultural Village is one of the Free State’s premier attractions. Located within the official boundaries of the magnificent Golden Gate National Park near Clarens, the Basotho Cultural Village is an easy must see for any visitors to the Free State thanks to its convenient location en-route to and from other popular Eastern Free State Highlands destinations.

The Basotho Cultural Village is a living museum showcasing the traditional livestyle and heritage of the Basotho Nation (South Sotho people) who are indigenous to the Maluti Mountain area. Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom that borders the Golden Gate Park, is in fact their own independent country under the authority of their King.

There is a curio shop included in the ‘museum’ where you can purchase traditional beadwork and clay ‘homewares’ after your tour, exchibitions and traditional dancing (day only). You can also join a walking tour with a traditional healer (Ngaka) who will show you the wild herbs and grasses used in traditional medicine.

Getting there: The Basotho Cultural Village is located next to the R712 just inside the Golden Gate park boundary. If you have come across references to it being located in the Qwa Qwa (Qwagwa) National Park, please note that this park has been incorporated into the Golden Gate National Park.

There is also a rest camp at the Basotho Cultural Village offering luxury hut accommodation.
