Trudie Kannemeyer’s Cape bathroom went from being a purely functional space to glamorous ‘spathroom’
“My bathroom was dated, drab and sad,” says Trudie Kannemeyer, co-owner of Urban Lifestyle Interior Design. “My husband Kurt and I bought this house five years ago when I was six months pregnant with our daughter, Charly. At the time we knew the space would require some minor renovations.”
How this bathroom went from dated to glam
“I bought this wonderful twin basin unit in mango wood with a solid stone top and that kick-started the whole project,” says Trudie, who managed this revamp with the help of her associate, Jeanne-Marie Bosman.
The only major building work was the removal of the shower floor, which was jack hammered out and the outlet pipe lowered in order for the shower to be on the same level as the rest of the bathroom. The main plumbing points were retained but all the tiles and fittings were stripped. A free-standing bath and an open shower with a single sheet of glass replaced the old built-in fittings. The floors and walls were then treated with Stucco Italiano cement-based plaster in a low shine, smoke finish.
To finish off the look and give a more furnished feel, the windows were dressed with curtains in a fabric from Home Fabrics and Trudie introduced a custom-made ottoman covered in a duck egg blue linen that doubles as a laundry basket. A cowhide, a nod to Trudie’s farming roots on the West Coast, adds another touch of comfort.
The end result is a peaceful, happy space which gives me an ‘ahhh’ moment every time I walk into it in the mornings,” says Trudie.
