Looking for a small but tough 4×4 camper? Motorhome-World, a South African company, is busy putting the final touches to a rugged motorhome built on the tried and trusted Iveco Daily 4×4
When it comes to long-distance travel, SUVs and double cabs simply can’t compete with the comfort and convenience offered by campers. A camper, after all, allows you to cart along nice-to-haves such as a microwave, shower, television set, stove and double bed.
But this comfort comes at a price: a camper tends to be big, bulky and not terribly easy to drive. So what is the solution?
What about a camper that is just about as small and nimble as an SUV?
Motorhome-World, a South African company with a factory in Cape Town, has announced that it will soon be launching an off-road motorhome based on the Iveco Daily 4×4 called the Discoverer Xtreme.
The Daily 4×4, the smallest high-performance off-road truck available, is an ideal platform for a small off-road camper, since it boasts truly impressive 4×4 ability.
This is due in large part to the fact that it has permanent all-wheel drive with three available differential locks, a parabolic suspension set-up with live front axle that offers ample articulation, an approach angle of 51 degrees and loads of ground clearance.
The version of the Daily 4×4 that will be used by Motorhome-World is fitted with a three-litre Euro 3 oilburner that can handle the high-sulphur diesel found throughout Africa.
The motorhome itself will be mounted on a torsion-free sub-frame, allowing for the wheels to stay firmly planted on the ground in all conditions. The body will be made of high-tech honeycomb sandwich panels that provide a light and durable body construction.
Although the interior of the motorhome is still being finalised, it will apparently boast a comfortable seating area, a French bed with a large storage area underneath the mattress, a bathroom with a shower and an outside kitchen with a sink and gas stove.
The Discoverer Xtreme will also be fitted with a hot and cold water system, 140-litre water tank, two spare wheels and a roof rack.
A long list of options will be available, and clients will be able to provide their own ideas for the interior design.
The big question, of course, is how much it will cost. This hasn’t been revealed, but Motorhome-World has stated that it wants the base unit to be priced below R1 million.
The vehicle will officially be unveiled at the 2013 Beeld Holiday Show, running from 15-17 February 2013 at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.
Be sure to visit the show if you want to see what this nifty and rugged little 4×4 camper looks like in the metal. For now, the artist’s impression pictured here should give you a good idea of what to expect.
