Mount Currie Nature Reserve, East Griqualand, KwaZulu-Natal

Mount Currie Nature Reserve, East Griqualand, KwaZulu-Natal

Mount Currie Nature Reserve is situated near the town of Kokstad at the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains in East Griqualand, KwaZulu-Natal. As the name suggests, the 2224m high Mount Currie is the main feature of the reserve. It is the only officially protected area in East Griqualand and is particularly well liked for its seclusion and serenity.

There are no official hikes in the reserve but a number of footpaths criss-cross the land up and around the mountain. The lower areas are characterized by grassy slopes dotted with Protea bushes and patches of montane forest. Crystal Dam, fed by the pure mountain water from the Crystal Spring, provides excellent boating and fishing opportunities and is also the source of water for Kokstad.

The reserve contains a monument to Boy Scouts that fell in action in East Africa during the First World War as well as a National Monument at the laager site where 2000 Griqua people, led by Adam Kok, settled after migrating to avoid confrontation with the Voortrekkers.

There is a fully serviced campsite in the reserve with ablution blocks, hot water, electrical plug points, barbecue facilities and a central dishwashing area. There are also two chalets, one with four beds and the other with two.

Getting there: the reserve is quite isolated and can be accessed from the Richmond/Umzimkulu Road from Pietermaritzburg or from the Franklin/Swartberg Road between Port Shepstone and Harding/Kokstad.
