Christmas Bands proudly strut their stuff
The annual Western Cape and Districts Christmas Bands Competition drew people from far and wide to Esselenpark Stadium this past weekend where the bands were judged on everything from their outfits to their marches.
The competition was opened by the Ceres Crusaders followed by Peace and Goodwill and the Pilgrim Crusaders.
The crowd rose to their feet as local Worcester band Vision of Daniel entered the stadium.
Perseverance and Young Guiding Stars also had the crowd on their feet, and the judges agreed and handed over the Best Dressed Squad award to Young Guiding Stars and the Grand March Past trophy went to Perseverance all the way from Elsies River.
In the overall standings, Peace and Goodwill ended in sixth place, Ceres Crusaders in fifth, Pilgrim Crusaders in fourth, Vision of Daniel in third, Young Guiding Stars in second and Perseverance in first place.
Jade Adams, public relations officer of Perseverance Christmas Band thanked Worcester for playing host to such a successful competition. “It was a great experience, but the heat caught us off guard. There is always room for improvement, but it felt good to take first place. We will, however, remain humble,” Adams concluded.
- The Cape Winelands Christmas Choir Union held their first competition for 2016 at the Tulbagh sports grounds on 31 January. The competition was off to a late start due to the heat, but according to The Fleet’s representatives, its choir was undoubtedly the favourite and compelled the other choirs to up their standard.
The heat, however, affected the youngsters as some of the Tiny Tots received treatment for heat exhaustion. The prescribed song The Prayer was a challenge to most of the choirs but the St. George’s choir rose above the rest and walked away with the points and the honour. In the Tiny Tots and Senior sections an overall win went to the Tulbagh Crusaders. The Fleet was crowned as the winners of the Junior section.
The next competition is scheduled to take place at Ceres on 21 February and the Union will hold its annual meeting at 10:30 in Robertson on 7 February.
