Kriel Colliery reaches ‘Millionaire Status’
There was reason for great celebration and merriment last week when Ihlosi Section at Kriel Colliery reached the much sought after goal of a million tonnes of coal.
What makes this feat even more admirable is the fact that they were the first coal mining CM and Shuttle Car section to reach this target in 2014, and did so with zero injuries.
It took an incredible 302 calendar days with a production average of 366 tonnes per hour and an amazing record of 7810 tonnes per day where the average is usually 4020 t/day.
It is the first millionaire status section for Kriel in five years, and an amazing first for the Inhlozi section which can be found at North West Shaft.
A total of 604 shifts were worked tirelessly, and a very excited General Manager, Mr Bonke Ntimane rejoiced with the workers on November 7, at an impromptu celebration held for the shaft.
“Viva Ihlozi Viva,” rang through the crowd with words of congratulations, excitement and thanks to all who contributed to the effort offered by Charles Madinga, Shaft manager.
“I think what makes this achievement so noteworthy is that we can pride ourselves on zero harm! We had not one injury to any employee,” said Mr Ian Hogg, Chief Safety Officer at Kriel Colliery.
The crew is not only applauded for their excellent production but more importantly for their safety. This proves that by focusing on standards, production and safety need not be mutually exclusive.
The mine is certainly performing within the coal mining industry and they expect to celebrate again in December when the Phumba section attains its millionaire status.
What a feat indeed!
