Welington ready to send off world’s biggest elephant cake
The “Biggest Elephant Cake in the World” is currently being built by cake maestro Dot Klerck in the picturesque town of Wellington. Join us for the official send-off of this amazing work of art at Wellington Wines in Bovlei Road on Thursday, 1 June 2017, at 13h00. The cake will then be transported to the Cape Town International Convention Centre, where it will be on display until Sunday in aid of wildlife charities.
It took 1200 eggs, 90kg sugar, 35kg buttercream, 42kg chocolate and many baking hours to complete this project.
Herewith some background information to this amazing project.
Due to the rapidly diminishing numbers of African elephants, Elda Fornasi-Thomas, wildlife enthusiast and founder of The Elephant Project SA, decided to once again present Wellington-based Dot Klerck with a challenge – this time to construct the biggest elephant cake in the world. Following on the success of her hugely popular rhino cake in 2016, Dot again volunteered her phenomenal skills and precious time to raise funds for the International Fund for Animal Welfare” (IFAW) and The Elephant Project SA during this year’s Good Food and Wine Fair.
Dot hails from Wellington and honed her skills in art and sculpture before falling head over heels into the sugar world. Now an award-winning cake artist, she started out making cakes for her children and from there it became her business. Her cakes have been featured on television, both locally and internationally and in many international cake magazines and art books over the years. Dot is invited to teach at Sugar Schools all around the world and continues to create cakes in between international classes. Dot lives in Wellington with her husband (the brain behind the engineering and structural design of many of her cakes) and four children. She is passionate about wildlife, combining her skills and talent in this cake project enables her to both educate others on the plight of our African giants and indulge in another extreme cake project that she so enjoys.
The cake can be purchased and all the monies will be donated to IFAW. Details on how to purchase the cake can be found at www.theelephantprojectsa.co.za.
