Scuba Diving in Gauteng
One of the South Africa’s premier freshwater dive sites is located at Henley-on-Klip in Vereeniging, barely 40 minutes drive from Johannesburg’s Northern Suburbs.
Bass Lake is 10ha freshwater lake with good visibility – up to 8m in the mornings before divers kick up silt. The lake is fed by a spring and offers safe recreational diving to a maximum depth of 23m. Bass Lake is also considered to be the best Scuba Training venue in South Africa.
A great many scuba training companies use Bass Lake, with many based in Gauteng, and a range of certifications are offered from PADI, NAUI, SSI, CMAS and IANTD – from Open Water 1 through to rescue diver. Courses done at Bass Lake include scuba diver courses, advanced diver courses, stress and rescue diver courses, deep diving courses – max depth 23m, night diving courses, nitrox diving courses, dry-suit diving courses, underwater navigation courses and dive instructor training.
There are several training grids in the Lake, and some interesting underwater wrecks for the more experienced divers, including that of a helicopter, a hang-glider, a bus and a mine truck. Night diving is subject to optimal conditions.
The venue is also unique in that a variety of accommodation and activities options are available for non-divers – making it the ideal venue to learn to do a scuba course if you have a partner of family to keep busy…
Facilities at Bass Lake include a fill station and dive gear hire.
