Celebrating Fathers in June on the Dolphin Coast
Fathers Day was created more than 100 years ago. A Day set aside to commemorate the man who has held your hand when needed, had your back as required and pushed you further than you ever thought you could go.
The inventor, Sonora Dodd, was a little upset with a sermon given by her local priest to commemorate Mothers Day in 1908. Dodd, who was raised by a single dad felt they deserved equal recognition.
“I liked everything you said about motherhood,” Sonora Dodd recalled telling the priest in a 1972 interview. “However, don’t you think fathers deserve a place in the sun too?”
At a time when popular culture portrayed fathers as sleazy, lazy and drunk, Dodd felt men like her father deserved praise.
Current statistics estimate more than 15% of single parents are men. And more than 71% of 6 year olds stated they ate breakfast and dinner with their fathers every day in 2006.
“While its easy to ridicule men who mess up,” says Michael Gurian, an author who specializes in struggles of men in the modern world, “We have to equally celebrate them and empower them too.”
Fathers are good about reading to their children, praising them at least three times a day and taking them on outings. A recent survey reports.
Fathers Day is about honoring the role of the father. “To protect the importance of fathering is to protect civilization.” says Gurian.
What will you be doing with your Dad this June 21st? Take him to a show? A ‘made for the guys sort of show at the Barnyard?
Perhaps he would appreciate a pre-arranged lunch at one of the most exclusive venues on the coast, like The Oyster Box, Umhlanga? Perhaps he is more particular and would love a meal at one of his favorite restaurants in Ballito or Umhlanga?
If he is more of an outdoor guy, an adrenalin racing morning of mountain biking at Holla Trails, Sugar Rush or Giba Gorge could put a sparkle in his eye, or arrange a once in a lifetime fishing day for just you and him….
Whether you’ll be shopping for a gift, an experience or simply spending time with the guy, we hope THIS Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21 st 2015, is a day of love, bonding and sharing for all ‘Dads’ out there.
