If you are a rugby fanatic, then the Victoria Trading Post will not only satisfy the cravings of your grumbling insides with freshly baked pie, some biltong or some sweet and sticky fruit preserves – it will give you the chance to meet the wife of “Mannetjies” Roux, Charlotte, who runs the Trading Post and find out about the rugby legend.
Rugby star Roux led Griqualand West to their third Currie Cup title and retired in 1970. He got his Afrikaans nickname, “little man”, from a domestic worker, amused by his cocky attitude as a young boy. The Mannetjies Roux Museum is dedicated to his private collection of rugby memorabilia and his historic contribution to the game. His claim to fame in the rugby world is that he was capped no fewer than 27 times, six of these at wing and 21 at centre, scoring six tries.
The padstal sells a collection of old enamel kitchenware, old bottles and porcelain and other nostalgic items. Besides pies and biltong, the hungry can quench their thirst with locally made ginger beer, dried fruit and droëwors (dried sausage) or purchase a variety of home-made jams and bottled fruit.
There are restrooms available at the Victoria Trading Post and you can also enjoy a cup of tea on the stoep. The padstal is situated in an old tin building dating back to the diamond rush on Helpmekaar Street.
The Trading Post also offers overnight accommodation. Swimming pool, fully equipped kitchen, TV, spacious living room and lots, lots more. Self-catering with light breakfast provided. Braai packs also available. Karoo lamb meals available on request. Safe under-roof parking with lockable gate.
