Vergelegen Nature Reserve, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal
Vergelegen Nature Reserve is located in the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area in the southern part of the uKhahlamba-Drakenberg Park. The reserve is small at about 1150 Ha and the terrain is characterized by very steep grassy hillsides and deep gorges.
Although this reserve is small and secluded it is the gateway to some of the most remote areas of this wilderness area. There are a number of very pleasant walks in the reserve – the scenery will not disappoint, and you can expect to see eland, mountain reedbuck, grey reebok and oribi as well as many bird species.
Nearby towns are Himeville and Underberg.
The Mohlesi Pass is a 50 Km, 2 day hike. It is physically demanding and should not be attempted unless you are fit because you will have to deal with an altitude gain of 1600 metres to the top of the pass. The highest point in Africa south of Kilimanjaro is about 5 Km away across the border in Lesotho.
