Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve, Midlands Meander

The Howick falls cascade into the Umgeni ValleyThe beautiful Umgeni Valley lies in the heart of the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands, created by the Umgeni River as it cascades over the Howick Falls.

In 1973, WESSA established that the aim of the reserve was to maintain it in its natural state and provide for the needs of Environmental Education. Over thirty-five years later, the reserve still provides quality Environmental Education courses.

The reserve is home to giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope. It is a bird lover’s paradise, with over 270 species identified here to date, including the rare and beautiful Narina Trogon and Crowned Eagle. Some of the most popular activities here include the indigenous tree trail, taken around the main Education Centre, self-guided walks through the valley as well as taking in the views of the magnificent Howick Falls.
