Tsolwana Game Reserve, Eastern Cape
The Tsolwana Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape is an 8500 hectare reserve situated on the edge of the Winterberg Mountain range, mid-way between Queenstown and Cradock. Born out of the need to reduce the livestock in the area, this initiative resulted in a tribal community project, bringing in revenue for the locals.
Tsolwana is in a beautiful mountainous area, with grassy plains and acacia thornveld, which is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora. You will find giraffe, wildebeest, white rhino, many species of antelope like eland, springbok, blesbok and mountain reedbuck as well as the Cape mountain zebra, chacma baboon, bat-eared fox and ostrich.
The reserve serves as an ideal destination for the keen outdoor enthusiast who enjoys walking trails, game viewing, bird and especially vulture viewing, horse riding, mountain trails, rock art sites, all combined with magnificent scenery.
Walking trails in the Tsolwana Game Reserve can be unaccompanied, or one can be escorted by an experienced and knowledgeable ranger. Visitors to the reserve can hike to any of a number of picnic sites in the area, where chopped firewood is provided.
Tsolwana is wet, but hot, in summer when temperatures can reach 38°C (between November and March) and winter can be very cold when snow is not uncommon.
Tsolwana Nature Reserve is situated approximately 60 km west of Queenstown and 30 km south east of Tarkastad, nestled on the edge of the Winterberg range.
