The Witteberg Private Nature Reserve, Diep en Deur 4×4 Trail
The Witteberg Private Nature Reserve, off the N1 between Touws River and Matjiesfontein in the Karoo, is located 250 km from Cape Town in the heart of the Witteberg Mountains.
Tom Lewis and Frik Linde, after creating a very successful outdoor experience with 4×4 routes, voted into the Top 10 in South Africa at Mont Eco near Montague, had a passion.
They wanted to build a true wilderness lifestyle, accessible to those who share their love of wild open spaces, starry, black night skies and clean air perfumed with the fragrance of fynbos.
The Witteberg Private Nature Reserve is the embodiment of that dream.
The Witteberg area is a wonderland of flora, and fauna on the property include grey rhebuck, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, aardwolf, aardvark, black-backed jackal, leopard, caracal, Cape fox, bat-eared fox and many more. The prolific birdlife includes many colourful species of nectar sippers.
The rich cultural-historic elements on the property include Late Stone Age artefacts, marine trace fossils, many historic buildings and other historic structures. The total size of the reserve is 4365 hectares, or about 44 square kilometres.
A network of six 4×4 mountain trails covering about 48 km, provides access to all corners of the property. Most of these trails are quite easy, and take you through the stunning scenery, but the 15 km Diep en Deur Trail is much more of a challenge.
The following self-catering accommodation is available: – A rustic historic cottage sleeping up to 6 people – Two 4-sleeper apartments – One 2-sleeper apartment All units are furnished and equipped. Bedding and bath towels are provided.
