The Talana Battlefield Museum, Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal

The Talana Museum, DundeeThe Zulu word Talana means, “the shelf where precious items are stored”. Considering the history of the area, this is a very appropriate name for the museum. The museum was started in 1979 to commemorate the Anglo-Zulu war, and was moved to its present location on a Dundee farm in 1983.

The museum displays weapons, uniforms, photographs and artifacts that depict the rich history of the area in a manner that brings it fully to life. But the history contained within the museum is not restricted to wars between the Zulus, Boers and Brits. There is also a rich coal mining history in this area, so much so that Dundee was once dubbed ‘coalopolis’, as well as a history of glass manufacturing. The museum displays exhibits of all of the above.

Visit The Talana Museum

Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 going north-west. Turn off at the N11 going to Ladysmith, and take the R602 going into Dundee. Here, follow the signs to the Talana Museum.
