The Grootberg Hiking Trail, Napier
This trail around the summit of the Grootberg, southeast of Napier, offers the hiker a unique opportunity to see a large variety of fynbos species and birds along a clearly marked route.
The Grootberg Hiking Trail covers a distance of 8km, is for the moderately fit and takes approximately 3.5 hours. It starts at the FM Tower, takes you to the Grootberg beacon from where you will enjoy a spectacular view and then on to Sopieshoogte, around the mountain and back to the start. The views are truly spectacular and worth the effort. You can see all the way to the coast on a clear day.
A great place to stop for refreshment is Sopieshoogte, the halfway mark of the trail. After Sopieshoogte, the road turns back towards the town and you can see all of Napier laid out in front of you.
Directions: Drive out of town on Plein Street and up the mountain along the gravel road to the FM tower. You will drive through the Napier conservancy, which has beautiful fynbos and klipspringers. There is parking at the tower. Take your binoculars for bird watching. Tel: +27 28 423 3049
