The Cathedral Peak Two Passes hike, Drakensberg

The Inner and Outer horns, features along the Cathedral Peak Two Passes hike.This 37km, 3-day hike is a demanding hike that should only be attempted by fit and experienced hikers. The route begins at Arendsig Gate at the end of Mike’s Pass, from where you begin your ascent up the Organ Pipes Pass. Along this pass you will ascend a total altitude of 900m. The overnight stop on the first day is at the Ndumeni Caves, which are two small shelters high up on the Ndumeni Dome.

On the second day, the path traverses close to the edge of the escarpment, offering awe-inspiring views. Hikers can see prominent landmarks such as the Column, Pyramid, Cockade and Elephant and the Cathedral Range. The overnight stop is at Twins Cave.

Day three’s hike involves a steep descent along the Mlambonja Pass. Here, it is important to take your time, both for safety reasons and to take in the spectacular features of the Inner and Outer Horn.

Trail info: Maps are available at the Reservation Office. Accomodation before and after the trail is available in luxury chalets and tented sites at Cathedral Peak.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 going through Mooi River and Estcourt. Take the R74 to Winterton. Look out for signs to Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve.
