The Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s best attractions. More than just a magnificent geological feature of sheer forested cliffs and red sandstone, the Canyon also has a rich history.

The Blyde River Canyon is one of deepest canyons in the world, averaging a depth of 762 metres, and it is 26 kilometres long. It is also one of the greenest canyons, with rich and varied flora and fauna, and undoubtedly one of the loveliest.

A photographer’s dream, the Blyde River Canyon stretches from Graskop north toward the Limpopo Border, and features several fascinating features that are destinations in their own rights, such as the Bourke’s Luck Potholes. The full winding length of the Blyde River Canyon has been proclaimed as the Blyde River Nature Reserve, and you can stay in the reserve and travel the length of the Canyon along a marked route to visit the various topographical and other features and put your photography skills to the test.

Getting there: Start at Graskop.
