Stoumann’s Wines, Vredendal, West Coast
Stoumann’s Winery near Vredendal, is situated in the heart of the fertile Olifants River Valley of the Western Cape. Starting from small beginnings in 1998, they have grown in leaps and bounds from the smallest cellar on the West Coast Wine Route, to a cellar, which in 2009, pressed 960 tons, of which 90% was white and 10% was red grapes. Erik Schlünz joined the cellar in 2007 as Manager/Winemaker. They strive to produce quality wines in small quantities. Unique cultivation methods in the vineyards ensure top quality grapes to the cellar. A small oak barrel is the key to the maturation of Stoumann’s Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vin de la Tortue wines, which are stored for one year before bottling.
Most of the wines are sold in bulk to international countries. The following wines are available at the cellar: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Vin de la Torte: White – Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc: Fortified – Red Muskadel, White Muskadel and Hanepoot.
Stoumann’s Wines has a passion for protecting the prehistoric endangered geometric tortoise, found in their area of the West Coast. In cooperation with Nature Conservation, the family is dedicated to the protection and resettlement of the endangered geometric tortoise of Namaqualand, the “suurpootjie”. It follows that the emblem on their labels and corks would represent the tortoise.

Travel directions: Depending on which direction you will be traveling in, take the Vredendal turnoff from the N7 at either Klawer or Vanrhynsdorp.
Traveling from Klawer you will pass the Spruitdrift Cellar, down towards Rondog and Vredendal Nursery (Kwekery) on the left. About 500m along to your right, look out for the white walled entrance marked “Stoumann’s Wines”. Turn in towards your right and follow the pointers.
Traveling from Vanrhynsdorp, you will drive into the town of Vredendal, turning left at the traffic lights with Standard Bank to your left. Carry on through town and follow the road for about 2,2km. Turn left at the Stoumann’s Wines entrance and follow the pointers.
