Springbok, Namaqualand, Northern Cape

The historic town of Springbok lies in a peaceful valley in the Northern CapeThis historic little Northern Cape town lies in a valley that bisects the hills of the Klein Kopperberge (small copper mountains). The town lies in a peaceful setting surrounded by the comfort of space and silence. It owes its existence to copper mining that took place in the region in the mid-eighteen-hundreds. The town was a British strong-hold during the Anglo-Boer war and a historic defeat was achieved by the Boers here when a commando led by General Jan Smuts destroyed the fort on the hillock at Springbok.

Today, Springbok is regarded as the commercial and cultural capital of the Namaqualand region. It is also the ideal half-way point on a trip from Cape Town to Windhoek in Namibia, being only 550km from Cape Town on the N7.

The Namaqualand spring wild flowers are phenomenon of international ecological importance as the landscape explodes into a kaleidoscope of colour with the most diverse floral display on the planet. The Goegap Nature Reserve and Namaqua National Park in close proximity to Springbok offer some of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the country.

Getting there: Springbok lies along the N7, approximately 550km from Cape Town.
