Sporekrans Hiking Trail
The 2 day Sporekrans Hiking Trail is considered one of the best in the Eastern Free State.
The trail is rated as moderate, but the overnight is in a cave without mattresses of creature comforts. There are also numerous up and down climbs, and it’s a backpacking trail where everything must be carried, so a degree of fitness and surefootedness is required. There is also an elevated path and a very steep descent into a gorge which will test anyone with a fear of heights.
The trail starts 45km from the town of Bethlehem and heads south along the line of the Witteberg Mountains to Fouriesburg.
This area is known for its fabulous sandstone formations, caves and overhangs, gorges, rock pools and magnificent views, and the Sporekrans features many of all the best of these.
Day 1 of the trail is 12km and moves through the Bergdeel Private Nature Reserve, with good game viewing and birding, including the rare Bald Ibis. This first day is littered with interesting formations and spots – all named, as is the tradition. You will hike through ‘Marriage Corner’ and up ‘Caracal’s Ladder’ to the sandstone formations of to ‘Guardian Angel’s Post’ and ‘God’s Little Finger’ to the ‘Bushmen’s Baths’, then on to ‘Mermaid Pools’ for swim and lunch, then up to Bushman’s Cave where you overnight.
Day 2 is a shorter trail of 6km back to the camp on the reserve.
Groups of up to 24 hikers can be accommodated on this trail.
