Spitskop Nature Reserve, Green Kalahari, Northern Cape
The 5600ha Spitskop Nature Reserve, Green Kalahari, 13 km north of Upington in the Northern Cape (R360) is typical of the Kalahari Desert. The reserve derives its name from the prominent steep rocky hill close to the entrance. After summer rains, the reserve bursts into carpets of the typical Kalahari flora.
Home to eland, oryx, wildebeest, springbok, blesbok, zebra, camel, steenbok, suricate, squirrel and mongoose, as well and birds such as ostrich and sandgrouse and reptiles like the tortoise, puff adder and Cape cobra, the reserve is a good place to stop en-route to the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (Kgalagadi).
There are 37 km of good gravel roads which lead the visitor through the reserve. The terrain is flat and the going easy – great news for the laid back cyclist. Three are walking trails, all of different distances, the longer having an overnight hut with a lapa and running water. On top of Spitskop Hill is a telescope for game viewing. A number of lapas and braai areas are provided in the reserve.
A fully equipped hut, for 4 persons, with electricity and ablution facilities, is available and campers are especially welcome. There is a swimming pool and laundry facilities.

Kalahari Monate Lodge is situated just across from the entrance to Spitskop Nature Reserve. This new Lodge consist of 6 luxurious self-serve Chalets with air-conditioning, fully furnished, a swimming pool and camping facilities with very neat ablution blocks.
