Sophiatown Bar Lounge, Newtown, Johannesburg

Sophiatown, a township at the heart of African cultureSophiatown Bar Lounge, next to the Market Theatre, is an authentic local experience, set in a culturally-themed bar lounge, based on the good old days of Sophiatown.

Before the forced removal of its residents, Sophiatown, with its sense of community, dance, music, and home-brewed beer, was the symbolic centre of black culture.

The owners of Sophiatown, the Thabethe brothers, Rasta and Mzwandile seen below, have brought Sophiatown history to life for us all to appreciate, in a relaxed space overlooking the city skyline, offering good food and live music. The bands change often, and offer a wide range of music, from party to Afro-pop and jazz on Thursday and Saturday evenings and Friday cocktail. Rasta and Mzwandile are focussed on offering customers quality, be it food, service or ambiance.

Sophiatown appeals to the middle and upper class, young, black crowd; to tourists who want to experience a real taste of  the black soul of Africa and to patrons of the Market Theatre, who can round off their show with this cultural gem.

So, if you want to sit back and relax in Afro-chic style with some foot-tapping action, then step into Sophiatown bar lounge on the corner of Jeppe and Henry Nxumalo streets in Newtown. Mzwandile has mentioned that the parking and surrounding area is completely safe.
