Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, Western CapeRust en Vrede Wine Estate, founded in 1694 by the Cape Governor of the time, Willem Adriaan van der Stel, has a rich history. The first vineyards were planted in 1730 but 200 years later the farm fell into a state of neglect. It was acquired by Jannie Engelbrecht, the ex Springbok rugby player, in 1977 and the first wine of the modern era was produced in 1979.

Today the estate produces the finest red wines matured in French Nevere oak barrels. The family was honoured by Nelson Mandela when he chose a Rust en Vrede wine to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo in 1993 and in 1994 when he awarded the South African Export Achievement Award to the estate. In 1998 a Rust en Vrede Estate wine was nominated as the best blended red wine in the world at the World Wine Championships in the USA and in the following year the American wine magazine, Wine Spectator, named the winery in the top 100 estates in the world. So if you’re looking for the finest red wines, make sure you visit this very successful estate.

The original wine cellar, an Historical Monument, has been converted into the Rust en Vrede restaurant, voted the 61st best restaurant in the world at the annual San Pellegrino Awards. Apart from the world class cuisine, the restaurant exudes a warm and relaxed ambience with the kitchen “front and centre” and specially designed pottery and Languiole knives adding to the impeccable style.
