Rooipoort Private Nature Reserve, Kimberley, Northern Cape
Rooipoort Nature Reserve is one of the earliest nature conservation areas in South Africa. It was established in 1893 and is owned by De Beers Consolidated Mines. The reserve was declared the fourth South African Natural Heritage Site in 1985 and stretches across 40 000 hectares along a 32 km river frontage on the banks of the Vaal River. It is one of the largest private reserves in the country. Rooipoort is set in the transition zone between the Karoo, Kalahari and grassland zones and boasts 310 bird species.
