Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal
Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve lies about 20 km inland from the south coast town of Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. The gorge has been carved out by the Umzimkulwana River to create one of the most spectacular natural settings in South Africa.
There are a number of beautiful picnic spots in the reserve on the banks of the river, but don’t be tempted to swim in the river – you could catch bilharzia. A suspension bridge crosses the gorge and there is a rock ledge that justs out over the gorge providing great views as well as an adrenalin rush. Photographers will be richly rewarded.
A number of scenic hiking trails will allow you to take in the abundant plant and animal life in the reserve – you could see bushbuck, common duiker, reedbuck and with lots of luck, maybe even a leopard. There are over 250 recorded bird species in the reserve including the elusive Narina trogon and the Knysna turaco.
Accommodation is available in a camp at the head of the Umzimkulwana Gorge with a wonderful view of Oribi Gorge. There are six 2 bed huts with electricity, shower and toilet as well as cutlery, crockery and bedding. For larger groups there are two chalets which can accommodate 8 and 7 people respectively, both with cutlery, crockery and bedding.
