Makana Botanical Gardens, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape

Makana Botanical Gardens, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape

Established in 1853, the Makana Botanical Gardens in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, is said to be the second oldest botanical gardens in South Africa, and has been declared a National Monument. It is situated close to Rhodes University.

Rhodes University itself has beautiful grounds covering over 200ha, so it was not surprising, therefore, that the university took over the maintenance of Makana botanical gardens and incorporated them into their already established gardens.

The gardens are worth a visit, particularly on week-day mornings, when few people are about.  A one-hour walk can produce many of the 180 plus bird species.

Directions: From Somerset Street, turn up the road between the Natural History and Cultural History sections of the Albany Museum ; the main gates to the gardens are on the left, soon after you pass the Eden Grove
