Kwantu Private Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

See the Big 5 at the malaria-free Kwantu Game Reserve in the heart of the Eastern Cape, on the Sidbury Plains near Grahamstown.

The reserve is home to the rare white rhino, lion, buffalo, elephant and leopard, which can be seen on game drives, but for a more personal touch, Kwantu offers the experience of  lifetime.

An elephant sanctuary on the reserve allows visitors to touch and even ride elephants, and an educational and rehabilitation centre allows for close up views of 5 different pedator species – cheetah, Bengal tiger, Serval cats, lion and  African wild dogs. There is also a reptile centre and a touch farm for the kids.

The reserve also has a day centre for day visitors and makes a great day out from Grahamstown or Port Elizabeth – the latter also only an hour away. For overnighters there is a choice of lodge or hotel accommodation.

The Kwantu Private Reserve also features its own village – the village of Sidbury, which is tiny and still inhabited piece of British history. Here, you can take in a game of cricket after your weekend game drive.

Getting there: The reserve straddles the N2 about 27km south of Grahamstown. From Grahamstown take the N2 south, turning right for Sidbury.
