Kei Mouth, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape
The Great Kei river is one of the most celebrated rivers in the Eastern Cape, both for its history with the Xhosa people and for the beauty and adventure that it offers to holiday makers on the Wild Coast. It is also home to one of the only remaining pontoon river-ferry services in South Africa, and for a bit of fun you can take your car across the Great Kei on the ‘Pont’ and explore a bit of the rugged Transkei coast. Crossing the river is also the quickest way to get to the Kei Mouth State Reserve, which lies on the banks of the Great Kei river and on the Transkei’s sheer and magnificent coastal cliif line.
Getting there: from East London, take the N2 going towards Umtata. Turn off at the R349. Keep left at the split and stay on the R349 all the way into the town of Kei Mouth.
