Kayak Tours Orange River Rafting, Hopetown, Northern Cape
Kayak Tours was established by Robbie Herreveld owner of the leading Paddlesport importer and retailer in Africa. During the 18 years Canoe & Kayak World has been operating, Robbie has been offering guided tours to his clients who have bought touring kayaks through his shop. This initially to assist the kayak owners to get the most out of their boats and to help establish paddling groups, but very quickly became a constant year round request.
The 60 km Orange River kayaking tour is one of our most exciting trips, with the right mix of rapids to get the adrenalin racing and flat stretches with magnificent scenery to aid relaxation. It is graded as Grade 2 – 3 rapids, Easy – Intermediate. The access point for this section of the !Xhariep river is Hopetown, the place where South Africa’s first diamond was discovered.
Paddle under the Old Wagon Bridge, the first bridge built over the Orange in 1871. Then navigate Hubbly Bubbly, but portage Hell’s Gate, as this is a waterfall you don’t want to shoot! Soon take on Thunder Alley, an incredibly beautiful 30-kilometre stretch of water, flanked by the most stunning, naturally carved black rock with occasional sandy beaches that are perfect for camping.
The trip is guided but self-catering, so bring your own camping equipment. Just remember that your equipment must fit onto your own kayak. Some flat-water paddling experience is required before this trip. Paddlers must be comfortable in the water, able to swim and moderately fit. There is a minimum age limit of 12 years.
