South Africa is world renowned for its gold and diamonds. Visitors come from all over the globe to purchase stones, and if this is your mission, then Jewel City in the Eastern precinct of Johannesburg is exactly where you need to be.
There are over 300 diamond dealers and jewellery manufacturers, the Diamond Board and State Trader Association, all housed in buildings covering six city blocks, bounded by Commissioner and Main streets in the north and south, and Berea and Phillip streets in the east and west. The entrance is in Main Street.
About R7-billion changes hands each year in the precinct. Gems are received and processed at Jewel City from Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Botswana.
Visitors must pass through X-ray scanners at the photograph identification entry point. There is parking for about 137 vehicles for the more than 500 daily visitors who mainly purchase cut and polished diamonds.
