James Hall Transport Museum, Johannesburg

James Hall Transport Museum

If you’re an avid car enthusiast, or just curious about the history of things, then you’ll enjoy a visit to the James Hall Transport Museum. Based in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, and established in 1964 by the late Jimmie Hall. The museum is home to an incredible collection of over 400 years of land transportation vehicles. Everything from steam driven vehicles, trains, trams and trolley buses to animal drawn carriages, early bicycles and cars of every shape and size under the African sun

The James Hall Museum of Transport is of mammoth proportions, as you can imagine, getting all this under one roof is no easy task. The museum contains a number of rare and important vehicles that have shaped the path of Africa’s transportation lineage.

There is every form of vehicle you can think of – if it could get you from A to B, it’ll be here. From animal powered, to steam powered, to pedal powered, you can uncover all the historical titbits about them all. The large courtyard is where you’ll find a number of steam vehicles (some still in working order) that are well worth exploring. If two-wheeled, pedal power is more your thing, then you won’t be disappointed by the collection of vintage bicycles and motorcycles on display – including the penny farthing.

This is the largest transportation museum in Africa!

In addition there is a fascinating collection of memorabilia, artifacts and special interest vehicles.

There is a tuck shop in the building should you feel peckish or if you have packed a picnic, there are lovely areas around the museum to setup camp. There is also a gift shop that sells postcards and transport related items.

There is secure parking within the museum grounds and the museum is accessible for the disabled, and wheelchairs are on hand at the entrance. Tours are available for school groups, clubs, interest groups and enthusiasts – booking is essential.
