The Tulbagh area is ideal for horse riding – the magnificent scenery of working wine and fruit farms and the mountainside vistas are hard to beat. Just over an hour from Cape Town, HorseAbout is found between Tulbagh and Ceres, on the majestically beautiful Fable Wine Farm.
John and Jo Lister, the owners of HorseAbout, are well-known horse people, who really care about their horses and safe, fun riding. From bombproof to energetic, they have horses to suit beginners and advanced riders, from kids to adults, matching you with the best equine partner for your chosen horseback adventure.
There are various trail options, which can include little extras like local wine and olive oil tastings or you can simply enjoy a leisurely meander through fynbos, vineyards and orchards. The Vineyard Trail, a one-hour scenic ride, is enjoyed by all levels of rider, but particularly suitable for the beginner as well as the not-so-fit rider. The two to three hour Witzenberg Trail is for the more experienced rider who is fit enough to be comfortable in the saddle for a few hours and confident at a trot and canter. There are also 2-3 day trail options available. Spectacular sunrise, sunset and moonlight trail rides let you experience riding with a difference or if you are celebrating a special event, HorseAbout will arrange a delicious picnic or pack a bottle of champagne to complete a magical day.
For your comfort, wear long pants and closed-toed shoes, ideally with a flat heels and remember to bring sunblock, a small water bottle, insect repellent – particularly for the evening rides.
If you enjoy more active horseback adventures, or would like to advance your riding skills, ask about the riding lessons, gymkhana and speed event training.
