Hlathikulu Trail, Umdoni Coast, KwaZulu Natal

The Hlathikulu Trail, is set in the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve amongst hills ranging from 150m to 610m above sea level.

The trail is a 4.2km circular route that offers spectacular views from the open ridges onto the ocean, interspersed with dense forested sections and extensive Drakensberg wild flowers. Enjoy a rest in the mist of the magnificent Nandi’s Falls or explore the pools along the Mpofane River.  The walk should take about an hour and half to complete.

More than 300 species of birds confirmed, specials include, African Crowned Eagle and Martial Eagle and as they are nesting within the Reserve, visitors have a great opportunity spotting them. There is also a nesting colony of one hundred Cape Vultures. There are 56 confirmed mammal species in the reserve including eland, zebra, blue wildebeest and bushbuck.

Difficulty: Moderate; suitable for children

Getting there: Near Umzinto. Turn off the south coast freeway at Park Rynie/Umzinto flyover and take the Highflats/Ixopo road. The reserve turnoff is about 3km past Umzinto. The entrance gate is 6km from this turn-off.
