Hiking in the Olifants Gorge, Mpumalanga

Hiking in the beautiful Olifants gorge, MpumalangaThe trails in the Olifants Gorge traverse an area of 15 000ha at the confluence of the Olifants and Wilge rivers, near the Loskop dam. The trail network is composed of two circular routes that can be hiked as day trails, or combined into overnight trails.

Slagthoek Trail: combines the God’s Window loop and Cycad loop to form a 23km, 2 day trail. Climb through stunning rock formations to viewpoints where you can enjoy stunning vistas of the Olifants River Gorge and the Hundred Hills. Descend through densely wooded kloofs and a natural cycad garden back to basecamp.

Kingdom Trail: combines two circular trails from the Kingdom basecamp to form a 24km, 2-day trail. Ascend through a kloof with a seasonal waterfall to the plateau, where you are afforded magnificent views of the Wilge River from Razor’s Edge. Hike through Black Rock Cascade to a viewpoint with unrivalled views of Die Hel, at the confluence of the Olifants and Wilge rivers.

Olifants Gorge Trail: Combines aforementioned trails to form two to four day hikes, depending on the combination. Overnight at the Grootdraai Hut and Kingdom basecamp.

Getting there: from Johannesburg, take the N12 going East towards Witbank. At Witbank, turn onto the R544 going north. Approximately 20km before Verena, turn right onto the road going into Loskop Dam Nature Reserve.
