Fishing at Hibberdene, South Coast, Kwazulu-Natal

Fishing off the rocks at HibberdeneThe coastline in front of Hibberdene consists of a number of small bays that alternate with rocky out-crops. There is deep water in the bays and off many of the rocky out-crops.

This is shad country and several spots here produce good catches all year round. The water is deep here, and anglers who have caught their limit of shad often put out a lice bait for garrick. Spinning and drift bait can also be quite productive along the beach front.

Directly below the lookout site on the national road, there is a well-known spot called Splash Rock. This is a fairly good deep-water spot and shad and larger predators often move in close to the rocks.

Tips for fishermen:

Shad generally go off the bite soon after sunrise, but they can suddenly go off the bite when the action is fast and furious. This could indicate the presence of larger predators, in which case you should fish with live bait to catch a fine gamefish.

Getting there: Hibberdene is approximately 100km south of Durban on the N2.
