Camping at Groen Spoeg, Namqua National Park, Namaqualand

Camping with the shore to yourself at Groen Spoeg, Namaqua National ParkGroen-Spoeg is a 50-kilometre stretch of coastline that was acquired by San Parks from De Beers Consolidated Mines in June 2010. It is an idyllic piece of virgin duneveld, having escaped from the scouring hands of miners in the area. It remains unspoilt and teeming with wildlife.

What Groen Spoeg really provides is a wilderness camping experience second-to-none on this exquisite stretch of South African coastline. The Namaqua National Park is already one of the wildest parts of South Africa, but Groen Spoeg epitomises true wilderness camping. There are eight camp sites here, each with very few amenities and accessible by 4×4 only. It is essential that you bring all your own food and equipment for your stay.

This is a unique and true wilderness experience not to be missed on this magnificent stretch of South African coastline, and is an essential addition to any trip into the Namaqua National Park. The best time of year to visit is during spring flower season, of course! Bookings and info

Getting there: Take the N7 north to Garies (430km).At Garies, turn left to Groen River. Follow the gravel road to Groen river (73km). At Groen River you will enter the park at the sign ‘Namaqua National Park- Coastal Section’ to your right. To enter, open and close the gate again. The office is approx 500m from the gate. From the office it is 20km along the coast to the Namaqua Flowers Beach Camp (strictly 4×4 only!).
