Caledon Nature Reserve, Motheo, Free State

The Caledon Nature Reserve, Free State, South AfricaThe beautiful 2300ha Caledon Nature Reserve, renowned for its tranquility and views, is situated between the Free State towns of Wepener and Smithfield, bordering on Lesotho on the R26 Maloti Route.

The reserve is arranged around the slow flowing and winding Caledon River, heavy with reed beds and birdlife, and also incorporates the Welbedacht Dam.. Over 200 species of bird have also been recorded here, including many species of water bird, and it is a catch-phrase that ‘above them all the ‘Fish Eagle reigns supreme’. The Fish Eagle, with its distinctive biting cry, recognized all over the world as synonymous with Africa, is almost an emblem of the Caledon Reserve.

Several species of antelope can also be seen on the reserve, including Black Wildebeest, Springbok and Blesbok. There are also Zebra and small predator species such as African Caracal.

The topography of the reserve around the winding Caledon River is hilly with several steep ravines, and the reserve is consequently as popular with hikers as it is with canoeists, fishermen and birders.

The accommodation on the Caledon Reserve is unique. There are two unique floating bush camps, with one can only accessible via a 4×4 route. Each camp can accommodate up to 16 people on four floating decks – and needless to say fishing for your supper is as much a part of sundown as the bubbles…

Each camp must be hired as a unit, irrespective of the number of people, up to a maximum of 16, and you need to take your own cutlery and bedding. There are ablutions and braai facilities with tables on the shore.

Fishing is permitted on the Reserve and catches include barbel, carp and yellowfish.

It is recommended that you either bring hiking gear or a 4×4 to be able to access all parts of the Reserve.
