Bontebok National Park, Swellendam

Bontebok National Park, SwellendamBontebok National Park is a place of simplistic beauty and peaceful charm. The majestic Langeberg Mountains provide a picturesque backdrop for this Park of colorful riches.

A part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, now heralded as a world heritage site, Bontebok National Park always offers something in bloom.  Home of the Bontebok, one of South Africa’s more colorful antelope as well as mountain zebra, grey rhebok, bat-eared foxes, geometric tortoises and over 200 bird species.

The river is a perfect swimming spot for the whole family or bring your own kayak to paddle through the beautiful landscape.

If you are an early bird and a fisherman, cast your line in the river and see if you can catch a fish before the Cape clawless otter snatches it. Carp, barbel, bream and mullet are all on the list, but first get a freshwater fishing permit (R45 for a year) from reception. Endemic species must be released, exotic fish can be taken.

The park has four short hiking trails and one mountain-bike route, but visitors are free to walk or cycle along 22km of dirt road in the park. Walk up Aloe Hill for a superb view over the river and the surrounding Langeberge.

Light and airy wooden chalets have their own kitchen, bathroom, braai and wraparound deck with river views. The chalets are open-plan and suited to two adults or a family of four. Two of the units are adapted for people with special needs. Chalet 7 has the best view, chalet 4 offers the most privacy. Excellent campsite with grass stands, electricity and modern ablution block.

Bontebok National Park is sign posted off the N2 just after Swellendam.
