Boesmanskloof (Greyton – McGregor) Hiking Trail

Boesmanskloof (Greyton McGregor) Hiking TrailIf you are in Greyton or McGregor in the Western Cape, you can do one of the extremely popular hikes in the Riviersonderend Mountains. The hike of 15km is through a cutting in the rugged mountains and links Greyton to McGregor. Situated in a pristine conservancy area managed by Cape Nature, you will experience beautiful mountain scenery, wild flowers in spring and great places to stop and take it all in. A series of waterfalls and pools known as the Oakes Falls provides swimming and a cool resting place to perk you up.

Animals found in the area include the duiker, Grey rhebok, klipspringer, baboon, dassie and spotted genet. Among the birds, species like the Black and booted eagle, Cape Sugarbird, malachite sunbird and other are found

The hike takes 4-5 hours and will be comfortable for the moderately fit.  You can start in either Greyton or McGregor (actually 14km from McGregor at a place called De Galg) and if you wish, you can sleep over at either end and do a return trip the next day.  There is no accommodation in the conservancy but plenty of options are available at either end.

Die Galg is a series of little cottages with beds and hot showers. They will supply you with the essentials for a meal, if you ask them, which means you don’t have to cart it with you. Die Galg also has a beautiful stone double storey cottage, known as the Eagle’s Nest, and a swimming pool (at very reasonable prices). Japie: 0828941462 Sandra: 0725144207 OR 023 625 1667 OR E-mail.

If you are thinking of just tackling one way, then the easiest option is from McGregor to Greyton as there is more downhill, especially at the end of the hike.  This region is hot in summer and water should be taken. Rain and cold can be expected in winter, so check the weather report first.

Greyton is a quaint town with a wonderful vibe, plenty of places to eat and interesting galleries of some top SA artists. It is a popular weekend getaway for Capetonians so check accommodation availability. It is also very close to Genadendal, a Mission village steeped in history and brimming with photo opportunities.
