Bloupunt Hiking Trail, Montagu

Bloupunt Hiking Trail MontaguThe Bloupunt hiking trail is a circular day hike of  5 to 9 hours and starts with a 1km straight up section. In total the hike is 15.6km and will be most enjoyed by fit hikers. It is rated as difficult and is pretty tough on the knees, but the views from the top will make it very worthwhile. The silence is awe-inspiring letting you experience the sounds of insects and birds. The mountain is covered in beautiful fynbos and fragrant smelling herbs in the wet places.

Make sure you carry plenty to drink. It can get very hot on the trail and there are long stretches without water. Keep an eye open for snakes on the path during the summer months.

The waterfalls are really worth a visit and there is plenty of opportunity for a swim, especially on the way down.

There are also other things to do in the Montagu Mountain Reserve. There are place for picnics and braai. There are two houses where you can stay in the nature reserve. In total there are 3 hiking trails in the reserve. The other two trails are the Badskloof trail which is 2,2 km and the Cogmanskloof trail which is 12,1 km long.

A valid permit is required to enter the mountain reserve and hike the trails this can be obtained at either entry of the reserve at Joubertpark, the Tourism Office and the at the hot springs.

Overnight accommodation is available at Klipspringer Cabin 1,5km from the parking area. This is a stone cabin with dormitory-type sleeping quarters for 12 hikers in total – 6 in each room. Woodfired stoves, braai facilities, hot water ablution and toilet facilities are available.

Camping is not permitted anywhere else.

No unaccompanied children under the age of 10 are allowed entry. No Vehicles are alowed beyond the parking area at Joubert park.

No pets and No fire arms are allowed – you are in a nature reserve. No removing of fauna and flora is permitted. Firm shoes, warm clothes, water & food essential! For your own safety remain on the clearly demarcated and signposted trails trails at all times. Hikers enter the hiking trails at their own risk.

How to get to the Montagu Mountain Reserve: Once in Montagu, turn left into Barry Street. Turn left into Meul Street/Mill Street. Turn right into Tanner Street. You will drive over a small river twice before you get to the nature reserve. No dogs please.
