Beaverlac Nature Reserve, Porterville, Western Cape

Beaverlac Nature Reserve, Porterville, Western Cape

Beaverlac Nature Reserve is a national heritage site, set in pristine fynbos in the Olifants River Mountains, just 25kms north of Porterville and two hours drive from Cape Town. Stretching over 5000ha of rugged mountain wilderness, around the Olifants and Ratel Rivers, this wonderful spot offers waterfalls and exquisite rock pools, bird life and rock formations, relaxation or activities like hiking and mountain biking.

For bikers, there are two main circular trails, 10 and 14kms, intermediate, and these may be done either individually or as a combined ride. The 10 km route, although very steep in places, is suitable for beginners. Those in the mood for technical riding could opt for a longer 14km trail, where rocky terrain and steep drop-offs will definitely test your balance and skills. A multitude of rough farm roads along the Groot Winterhoek ranges add endless riding possibilities.

The lovely campsite, shaded by pines, is radio and music free, to ensure you can hear the nocturnal rustlings and sounds of nature. The campsite is just a five minute walk from a spectacular mountain pool with waterfall and a five km walk from the Olifants River. It’s well worth checking out some of the other great swimming spots like the “Secret Pool“ and “Flat Rock“.

Some, but not all of the ablution blocks have hot water. They all have showers, flushing toilets and wash-up sinks, and they are cleaned regularly. Braai areas are generally simply small clearings on the ground with rocks around them. You need your own braai grid.

The shop stocks ice, beer, wine, & firewood, as well as other general commodities, and the prices are reasonable. There is no real cell-phone reception, but there is a public telephone.

No day visitors allowed, and bookings must be made for the cottages. You will receive a map of the walks and hikes on entry.

Getting there: take the N7 from Cape Town to Piketberg. Take a right at the petrol stop and head to Porterville. At the T-junction turn left to Cardouw — you are now on a good dirt road. Take a right up Dasklip Pass (the sign says Groot Winterhoek), and at the top follow the sign down to Beaverlac. The pass is tarred on the way up. The road down into the valley is 3.8km’s, and is short, steep, and pretty bad at times. Drive real slow and enjoy the scenery!
