Baynesfield Estate, Richmond, Natal Midlands, KwaZulu-Natal

Baynesfield Estate which is nestled in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, near Richmond, was established by Mr Joseph Baynes, who was one of the original Byrne Settlers. As a pioneer of the agricultural industry, Joseph Baynes took the lead in establishing an agricultural school in Cedara as well as a railway line that aided farmers in the area to transport their crop and stock to local markets.

His beautiful Victorian house and the adjacent museum have both been restored and are open to the public by appointment. On the Estate itself one can also enjoy a 14km hiking trail with overnight accomodation in the stone cottage that was built using original stone from the site of a cottage built by Baynes

The Museum is open Monday to Friday 08:30 – 16:00: For more information call: +27 33 251 0001: Website.

Getting there from Durban: Proceed along N3 towards Pietermaritzburg. Take exit 61 (Umlaas Rd/Umbumbulu/Eston) just after Camperdown turnoff. Take first turn right to Thornville/Richmond. Travel for about 13km and merge left onto R56 to Richmond. Travel less than 1km and turn right onto P334. Travel about 4km until you get to the main entrance of Baynesfield Estate.
