Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary, South Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary, South Coast, KwaZulu-NatalAmanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary is situated about 20 km from Durban on the South Coast. Whilst the 150 species are obviously the main attraction, the 4.5 ha park, with its lush coastal vegetation and birds flitting around, is a great place to unwind. The beautiful water features, green lawns and colourful gardens with the dense riverine forest backdrop creates a serene ambience.

A half-hour self-guided walk and the 3 hides overlooking the open water area of the park will fascinate you even if you are not an avid bird watcher. The kids will enjoy seeing the spurwing geese and the ducks paddling in the lake and they may even see a giant kingfisher diving for its prey.

Have a picnic on the lawns or relax at the tea garden with a delicious snack overlooking the lake. While you are in the area, why not visit the Ubogavango Nature Reserve or the Empesini Nature Reserve

The sanctuary is open from 6h00 to 18h00. Entrance is free.

Getting There: From the N2 take the Moss Kolnik / KwaMakhutha off-ramp. Travel east along Moss Kolnik Drive. At T-junction turn right into Kings-way Road, then right at robots into Umdoni Road. The reserve is on the right. – Umdoni Road, Amanzimtoti
