Stellenbosch University is all set to welcome first year students and their parents to the picturesque town of Stellenbosch, home to one of the top universities in South Africa. The welcoming programme will ensure an effective and smooth integration for first year students into life on campus.
During the Welcoming Programme, from 24 January until 2 February 2013, you will follow the programme of the faculty in which you are going to study. All new students are expected to attend the entire programme as set out in the booklet students received.
The Official Welcoming will take place on the Danie Craven Stadium on Thursday the 24th of January 2013 at 10h00.
Important Dates
Wednesday 23 January
First-year students arrive at their respective residences or PSO wards.
Thursday 24 January
Official welcoming; 10:00, Danie Craven stadium
SU Rector, Prof Russel Botman, will greet new students at the official welcoming ceremony (compulsory for all first-year students). Parents are also invited to attend the event. Please come early to avoid traffic congestion and to ensure that you find parking. Bring protection against the sun.
- Medical students: All new students and their parents (MBChB, BSc in Physiotherapy, and BSc in Dietetics) first attend the event in the Danie Craven stadium before they leave for Tygerberg campus).
Parent meetings with deans (Different times)
After the official welcoming ceremony parents will have the opportunity to meet the dean of the faculty where their child will study. Click here for a link to the welcoming programme with information about when and where these meetings will take place.
- Students in the programmes B of Speech-Language and Hearing Therapy and B of Occupational Therapy follow the programme of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on the Stellenbosch campus.
Sport club meetings (15:15 and 16:00)

Friday 25 January
- Students meet in their clusters (08:00-12:00).
- In the afternoon students will gather in their faculties to meet the dean and for an introduction. See the programme for details.
Saturday 26 January
- Language placement tests: All students will write language placement tests in the morning (Students in the Faculty of Engineering will write the test on Friday 25 January).
- Introduction of societies (Rooiplein and Neelsie 13:00 – 19:00): Visit www.sun.ac.za/societies for more information about societies at SU.
Maties MAD² Programme (Theme: HeroToons)
As part of the welcoming programme students participate in MAD² (Making A Decision 2 Make A Difference). See www.sun.ac.za/madsquare for more information.

- Community Interaction Morning – 1 February
- March for MADness (MAD² fun walk) – 2 February – 09:00
- Community Festival – 2 February – Van der Stel Sportgrounds from 12:00-24:00
- Boekhoek (for second-hand books) opens 4 February
- Coca-Cola Big Bleed – 4-8 February.
