Zastron, Xhariep Region, Free State

The small agricultural town of Zastron in the Southern Free State Xhariep Region is nestled at the foot of the Aasvoelberg Mountains on the Southern border of Lesotho, in an area of the Maluti foothills that is often described as ‘spectacular’.

The wide leafy streets of Zastron are dominated by one of the Free State’s many sandstone landmarks – a 9-metre round hole in a rock face that is affectionately known as The Eye of Zastron. Zastron’s location in rural and beautiful mountain foothills makes it a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts in general, and there are many other sandstone formations in the area, as well as waterfalls, caves, wildlife and bushman paintings.

The Zastron Municipal Caravan Park is the starting point for the 2 day Aasvoelberg Hiking Trail, but there are many other activities to be enjoyed around the town and in the Zastron district. Camping, day walks, hunting on private reserves and hunting farms, 4 x 4 trails, bird-watching, fly-fishing, quad-biking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, abseiling and river rafting are all on offer.

Zastron is the southernmost town in the Free State Highlands along the Lesotho border.

Getting there: From Bloemfontein, take the R702 south to Dewetsdorp, then continue along the same road to van Rooyensnek. At van Rooyensnek, turn south again onto the R26 to Zastron.
