Barrydale

Barrydale, known as the Gateway to the Overberg lies snugly at the foot of the beautiful Langeberg Mountains, in the Tradouw Valley. This peaceful town, with its neat houses and large gardens was built at the top of the Tradouw Pass by the residing boer-community.

The good weather and fertile soil is ideal for farming and Barrydale is a hub for apple, peach, apricot and other soft fruit production.

Barrydale has established itself as a great place for food on the R62.

Experience scrumptious delights in true traditional Boerekos-style at some of the delightful restaurants like Clarke of the Karoo and Diesel and Creme.

The Barrydale Wine Cellar has won many awards. Barrydale Winery produces the most extensive range of dry wines in the area and export-quality potstill brandies that remind one of cognac and is located just before Barrydale on the R62. Tastings and sales: Monday-Friday 09:00-17:00; Saturdays and public holidays 09:00-15:00; Please give us 24 hours’ notice if you’d like to visit the brandy distillery.

Barrydale Hand Weavers offers a choice of rugs, tableware, shawls and throws created on old fashioned wooden looms in a successful self help project aimed at providing a skill to people who might otherwise be unemployed. It is found in Laing Street.

Between Barrydale and Ladismith is Ronnie’s Sex Shop, another interesting stop for lunch, a snack or tea (but not, however, a sex shop!). Here you could meet visitors from all over the world or read graffiti from adoring fans!

Warmwaterberg Spa is a hot mineral spring set in the great outdoors and surrounded by five Klein Karoo mountain ranges – just the place to relax in the country while restoring mind, body and soul in the pools. It offers a wide variety of self catering accommodation, caravan sites and camping. Find it off the R62 on the Ladismith side of Barrydale just past Ronnie’s Sex Shop. The Manger in Lemoenshoek – in 1998 Peter and Nola Frazer followed their hearts and built an outdoor labyrinth on their farm. A Labyrinth is a meditational tool that dates back to the Northern European Bronze Age. called The Manger is 15km from Barrydale, on the R62 towards Ladismith. It is necessary to make an appointment to walk the Labyrinth as it attracts pilgrims from everywhere. Joubert-Tradauw Private Cellar is a Boutique Cellar on a working farm in the heart of the Tradouw Valley on the R62 just past . Meyer Joubert offers a selection of classic, European-style wines for tasting: a Chardonnay 2002 & R62 Cabernet/Merlot Blend 2000 that have attracted attention to Route 62, for quality and exclusivity. The Deli been opened at the Cellar, for people wanting to absorb the beauty of the magical Tradouw Valley, with a glass of quality wine and fresh, home-made produce all locally made. The estate is between Montague and Barrydale about 12km before Barrydale.
